Dang! My 64-bit VM image won't start after my host goes to sleep!

Here's a new one:

You unfortunately put your Windows 10 host computer to sleep - and it was running a few guest VMs that are 64-bit OS.

Upon awaking your computer, and restarting your VMs, you are greeted with an unfamiliar message:

Troubleshooting a crashed MySQL table

Just recently, I started receiving errors that pertained to a crashed semaphore table. A quick web search indicated that somehow, my MySQL database was not shutdown properly.

Many suggestions to fix this issue involved using PHPMyAdmin - but I've always been reluctant to use this tool as there are many accounts of this tool being used by crackers to get access to a database.

Accessing a backend server through Apache HTTP server

Scenario:

You have computers that perform dedicated tasks (servers), which you need to access from the web but would like to insulate these from the world wild web. You do not want to expose these backend servers: you want visiting web users to reach your front end server (for instance, www.MyWeb.com), which will then do the necessary work to display contents from these backend servers, based on client requests.

Open Source solutions for EDM

Businesses take it for granted that commercial software and hardware are necessary to reliably capture process data and other business items (such as contracts, customer information and shipping orders, for instance), manage it and format this information for (frequently, human) consumption, as part of their Enterprise Data Management (EDM).

Pipes, trains and... linked data?

Along with people, Enterprise Data Management involves processes and tools. The way these interact defines how your enterprise can respond to changes - be it introduction of new technologies, or reacting to supply chain interruption.

EDM and Service Lifecycle Management

If your manager expects you to follow a process under which you are accountable, then why should governments, utilities and healthcare service providers tell you of their intended process, but fail (or avoid) keeping you up-to-date as per that process, through some form of Service Lifecycle Management (SLM), for instance? Granted, SLM is usually associated to B2B revenue-generating maintenance activities performed on products that have been sold, but the methods carry over to other domains. Let's see how.

EDM and the lifespan of your business data

In my first post, I had introduced the Circular Economy (CE). The core idea was an argument to support the deployment of a new PLM application along side your legacy business applications, which arguably handle a variety of business activities, with the aim to extend the usefulness of these applications (and increase their overall ROI, hopefully).

Enterprise applications meets the circular economy

Road-trip, Detroit to Québec!

So, thinking of travelling from Detroit to Québec, "La Belle Province"?

The 401 can be (and will be!) boring - so, you've been warned! We always recommend "first-timers" to stop around Toronto or Niagara Falls for a day - alternate the destination on the way back from Montréal; this will make the trip more enjoyable.

Coffee and things...

Just like many people, I like a warm, rich and satisfying cup (and mug!) of coffee. What I don't like, however, is the burnt, acrid taste of bad coffee...

From the green bean to that savory cup of coffee, there are many ways to satisfaction. I'll skip the home-roasting (sigh!) to get down to enjoying the roasted coffee itself.

Setting up GMail mail relay for CentOS server with Postfix

After talking to a wall for a few weeks with Comcast about an issue I had with their mail server not relaying my mails, I decided to prove them wrong when they told me the issue was located at my end...

Here's a recap:

We use Comcast as cable provider, and we have a database of email recipients we contact
through email to announce our services.

Gourmet Maple Syrup Pie

This recipe is a great way to enjoy a French Canadian treat!  This pie has the consistency of a pecan pie, less the pecans.

LG HBM260 Bluetooth Wireless Headset w/ Text to Speech & Multipoint

The LG HBM260 is the 1st bluetooth (BT) headset I ever bought, and I do wonder why I waited so long for this purchase...!

The looks:

It's lightweight - it measures about 2 inches long, by 3/4 in wide. It is not a huge device, and the ear clip (made of soft plastic) rotates easily so the device can be used for either the left or right ear. It is full-featured though simple - 3 multi-purpose buttons will get you going in a snap:

Maker Faire 2012 - Henry Ford, Detroit

Well, the Maker Faire 2012 is over in Detroit. I went there to see the state of makers in the region of Detroit, which medias will repeatedly report is in the doldrum. As the saying goes, buy when everyone sells, and I can see people very active in micro factories and controllers, and WANTING to create "stuff", as my UK pal Matt would say. Thanks to the Arduino Uno, for one, partnered with the ATmega328 controller that, it seems, is ubiquitous in micro-controllers, there is now a slew of DIY 3D printer machines - and affordable!
